Sometimes I get to travel to peculiar destinations because of my job. This means by far all destinations I would have not chosen for my own destinations. I admit, that it is sometimes very hard to think out of the box about other destinations than the capital cities. The destination of our dance performance was this time Silkeborg, Denmark. Silkeborg is a small (¨40 000+ inhabitants) town in continent Denmark.
After getting to town info I was really looking forward to the trip. Silkeborg Museum is the location to see one local celebrity; Tollund Man! He is a mummy who was found from a swamp and he had preserved in peat for centuries. He is one of the oldest mummies found in whole world and has helped to to discover more about iron age. He was exceptional, beautiful and looked just like a man asleep. Unfortunately I was in a hurry and was not able to stay longer to examine the whole museum. The display cabins are nicely crafted, well decorated and they have professional lighting system to support the overall atmosphere.
It is a bit weird, but I have seen mummies in different places including Guanajuato in Mexico (Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato), Palermo in Italy (Catacombe dei Cappucini), Cairo in Egypt (Museum on Egyptian Antiquities, Egypt is now building a Grand Egyptian Museum nearby the pyramids in Giza) and now this. I don´t know how I unexpectedly end up to these destinations!
Our flights from Helsinki to Copenhagen were by Norwegian air company and I have to say it is the best "low cost" airline in Europe, that I had tested. On time, works like a NORMAL airline with seating and has free wifi on board - what a luxury! The cheapest journeys from Finland costs 39€ one way. Norwegian has wide network all over Europe but has also some flights further. If you are located in Southern Sweden, it might be worth taking your flights from Copenhagen.
The public transportation and train system is very good. There are different companies that operate the longer fast train routes and then the local trains in cities between. You can make a reservation (costs extra) to the longer trips, and if you do not have a reservations, you need to check where you sit. The system shows if the seat is reserved, on a small display above the seat number. The trips are relatively short, you can get from one side of the country to another in 5 hours. The only problem the localas said to be the lack of communication sometimes between the local trains and long haul trains, if one is late, the second connection might not wait. The train trip from Copenhagen to Silkeborg was 3,5 hours (404 DKK with reservation for one person). You can spot also even weirder destinations on the way...
Denmark is very easy country for traveling. Everyone speaks (now this really means everyone!) English and based on Swedish or Norwegian you can read Danish without too much trouble. Understanding talk can be quite opposite though. Danish people are very proud of their country in a cute way, you can for example see small Danish flags everywhere.
The national psyche is laid back, low key and relaxed. A good example may be that on our way to Silkeborg we saw people going to Smuckfest. it was naturally people from all age groups, starting from 15 year olds to 50 something. Everyone were happy and keeping up good spirit while it was raining and the train was full of people with bikes or backpacks.
Danish ladies also take care of themselves. You will not see a posh approach, the clothing style is practical (as in Finland) but also very sophisticated (good fabrics) with toned down colors and falling materials. It is not odd to see women driving bikes in a dress with girly colorful rubber boots on and matching scarf around their neck.
