Budget travel in Finland // Part 2 // by air

As some people, who have been here, say, that traveling on budget is not possible in Finland. I am about to prove you wrong. I will cover all means of travel (bus, car, plane and train) and provide some tips that even only a few locals know. How does a 35€ flight between Lapland and Helsinki sound to you?  This is budget travel in Finland by Miss Mureena.

Some flight destinations in Finland 2014
Above you can see a map of our beautiful country and the air carriers are marked in different colors. The main carriers in Finland are Finnair (local, marked with green spots), Flybe  (UK based low cost carrier,  marked with blue) and Norwegian (Norwegian low cost airline, marked in magenta).

The flight hub is Helsinki, our capital and mostly the flights leave and arrive there. All of the companies mentioned fly abroad as well, and the routes are well shown on the web pages. Finnair is the most expensive of them, while Norwegian and Flybe are about the same, though Norwegian beats the others with the wifi on board! However, all of them have pretty neat discounts from time to time and pay attention that planning ahead will always give you better discounts.

I think it is worth a while to check these alternatives if you are going to Lapland and you have a tight schedule because the flight saves time something like 10 hours. Of course there is the issue about the carbon footprint...the other alternative is the train and that takes longer time and it is sometimes the most expensive means of travel. To save time, flight is a good option combined with low cost bus tickets, especially if you are going to enjoy what Helsinki has to offer during your trip.

From abroad, Finland is connected with decent budget airlines such as Ryanair, Air Berlin, AirBaltic, Wizz Air  and the others mentioned earlier (at least during the time when this post is written, June 2014).

The best tip to check the air carriers is to check the destination airport and then find the list of the companies that fly there. Then you can plan your other connections with other (low cost) means such as flight, bus or train etc.  From this link your will enter the FINAVIA website (main page here) where you can choose your Finn destination and see the map of companies and destinations. From main page you´ll see other useful info about Finnish air travel. All of the companies above (and air travel in general) are safe and are not on any black lists according to EC laws.

Happy travels!
