The easiest way around Hanoi (old quarter) is on foot, if you are not scared about the traffic. The zebra crossings seems to be only for pussies...not that they really mean anything anyway. The ultimate exercise in the beginning is to cross the road, there is a way to make it at least look stylish even though you would have your heart in your throat. 

Step one - inspect carefully (maybe from a cafe) how the locals do it.

Step two - keep in mind that the traffic comes from all the directions all the time, full speed.

Step three - when you step on the street, do not hesitate.

Step four - keep calm, hope for the best.

Step five - keep the same (slowish) speed all the time! Now, this is very important, since the drivers  will estimate their speed compared to yours, and pass behind or right in front of you. DO NOT RUN, or make any extra gestures or unpredictable jumps!

Step six - congratulate yourself about a performance well done and have a Beer Hanoi or even a La Rue.
